Synchronized Cycling – The Next Olympic Sport?

A friend of mine sent me the video below. It’s from the 2009 European Junior Indoor Cycling Championships. Could this be track cycling? Some sort of indoor spin cylcing competition? Neither. Turns out it’s a completely different kind of cycling event…

I must admit, before getting this video, I had never seen or heard of this type of competition. Googling “Indoor Cycling” and you won’t get results for this ballet on two wheels. As you would expect, you get results for indoor training on your bike for racing or fitness. Thanks to Wikipedia, I learned this indoor cycling also referred to as “artistic cycling” is not new but has been around since the late 19th century with the first world championship in 1956. A video from the this year’s Asian championship in its 10th year can be found on youtube with a similar pairs routine. Although I must say, the girls above were more impressive.

Oh, and this is all done on a fixed gear bike. Chalk one up for the fixies? Or a good defense for the lycra wearing roadies?
