A beautiful weekend for riding
I was actually supposed to play in a golf tourney on Saturday but had to miss out due to a technicality with my index. Not that I'm a total sandbagger but knowing my luck I would have won and people would have complained about my index being too high. Not playing ended being a good thing. I slept in AND I got to do a sweet ride in absolutely gorgeous weather. Temps were in the 60's, sunny and blue skies. A pretty easy 100k with some steady climbing out of Alpine Dam and over the Seven Sisters around Mt Tam.
The only bad part of the day was rolling through Sausalito on the way back and seeing a girl riding just ahead of us get nailed by a guy opening his car door. Tim and I tried to help her but there were about 7 people swarmed around her, there was little we could do to improve the situation. I hope she is okay.
On Sunday, I needed to go a little longer and get a couple more hours in the saddle. My road bike is way too light and I fear I might be cheating myself not being on my heavier mtn bike. Nevertheless I do feel the more effective method of training is on the road. I think I learned that back in the day when Tomac and Ned Overend were at the top of the sport. Actually, I think Ned never left it. Last year I road the Swami's ride in San Diego and guess who showed up on his mtn bike? I just recall pain when he took to the front and shredded the group apart - knobby tires and all. Yeah I got shelled up the climb a few k's before the church. I think it was Kate Major that pulled my ass after I totally blew. Anyways, what was I just talking about? I think my point is I get a more consistent workout in but I think I do need to add weight so I was stuffing everything I could in all my pockets. Perhaps I should fill a bottle with lead shot like my friend Kelvin did! I was also wearing full leg warmers and arm warmers to simulate the inevitably hotter climates in South Africa. I hope the "heat training" pays off. I rolled out to Olema and back the coast and had the pleasure to ride with Sarah from Cheerwine and bunch of her pro women cyclist friends (who can all pretty much kick my ass). It was fun and another amazing day. Accelerade is proving its worth. Along with the gels, it's all I consumed the whole ride and felt great afterwards.
